Alexandra "Alix" Young is a secondary character in the book series by Kevin Kwan. Alexandra is the youngest daughter of James Young and Shang Su Yi.

Background[]

Alix is the mother of Eddie, Cecilia, and Alistair. She's married to a world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Malcolm Cheng. Despite her humble claiming of being "just a housewife", she's the one who's responsible in creating her family's massive fortune in real estate. She is also the only one of her siblings who can speak Mandarin, something mentioned in her mother Shang Su Yi's will.

Books[]

Crazy Rich Asians (novel)[]

Before attending Colin Khoo and Araminta Lee's "wedding of the century," Alix hosts a family meeting with her husband and all of her children and their families.

Crazy Rich Asians (movie)[]

She is first seen at Eleanor's Bible study and voices the hope that Nick is marrying a good Christian girl. She makes appearances at the tan hua party and the dumpling-making, commenting that American children will put their parents in old-folks homes for not taking good enough care of them.

While not openly supportive, she quietly compliments Rachel's dress at Araminta and Colin's wedding ceremony. At the wedding reception, after Rachel learns of the truth from Nick's Ah Ma and Eleanor, she perceives Alix and Felicity to be laughing at her. However, when Rachel runs away, Alix can actually be seen looking concernedly in her direction.

She is last seen at Rachel and Nick's engagement party cheering them on and showing her support for their relationship.

Personality[]

Alix is shown to be one of the more compassionate and open-minded members of her family. She was shocked by her son Eddie's ruthlessness in his efforts to ensure his own inheritance of Tyersall Park, and tried to resist playing along with him.

She is also humble and seeks to keep a low-profile, even modestly describing herself as "just a housewife" when in fact she was the one responsible for gaining a large fortune due to her real estate trading. She is also quite embarrassed by Eddie's flamboyant and theatric tendencies, refusing his offer to fly their entire family around in a private jet.

Alix was considered by her mother Shang Su Yi to be a "peacemaker," as she often stands up to mediate conflict, especially within her own family.
