Tan Sri Harry Leong is a Chinese-Malaysian politician and businessman, the father of Astrid Leong, and a secondary character in the Crazy Rich Asians series by Kevin Kwan.

Background[]

Harry Leong hails from the influential Peranakan (Straits Chinese) Leong family from Penang, Malaysia, which gained its wealth from their monopoly in the palm oil industry. Harry is married with Felicity Young, a daughter of James Young and Shang Su Yi. With her, he has three sons, Henry Jr., Peter, Alexander, and a daughter, Astrid. He is also the uncle of Nick Young, making him the uncle-in-law of Nick's wife Rachel Chu. One of his sisters married into the wealthy Khoo family and was the mother of Colin Khoo and Sophie Khoo.

By occupation, he is a politician, although he claims himself to be just a "public servant", as he works as the director of the Institute of ASEAN Affairs. Harry is one of the kingmakers in the government of Singapore.

Personality[]

Harry is a controlling father who cares a lot about his own image and the image of his family. He strongly disapproves of out of wedlock relationships, or relationships with "commoners," and strives to keep his family out of the press. For example, he disowned his son Alexander Leong for marrying Salimah, a local Malay woman, and bought every single copy of a tabloid magazine that included a story on his daughter, Astrid. He was also horrified by Astrid's "immoral" relationship with Charlie Wu, whom he disapproved of.
